What’s Happening During a Migraine?

Migraines are a neurological condition, not simply intense head pain. Episodes can last for hours or even days. Some people also experience an aura before a migraine, which may cause changes in vision or other sensory disturbances.

The exact cause of migraines isn’t fully understood. Genetics, although rare, and changes involving the brain and nervous system – more common – are thought to play a role, while individual and environmental factors may influence when episodes occur.

For people dealing with frequent or chronic migraines, identifying possible triggers and patterns can be especially useful. Recurring head pain without typical migraine symptoms may have different underlying causes, which we explore in more detail in our information about headache relief.

Common Triggers and Where the Neck Fits In

Migraine triggers vary widely from person to person. Stress, changes in sleep, dehydration, certain foods, hormonal shifts, bright lights, and other environmental factors may all play a role.
For some people, the neck may also be part of the picture. Poor posture, muscle tension, restricted movement, or a previous injury can affect how the neck and upper spine function and may lead to head and neck discomfort.
Tracking when your migraines occur and what happens before an episode can help reveal patterns that are worth discussing during your evaluation.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Chiropractic care focuses on the function and movement of the spine and nervous system. When areas of the neck and upper back aren’t moving properly, improving joint movement may help reduce pressure on the nervous system and improve overall function.

Dr. Wartenberg uses the Gonstead System of Chiropractic, a hands-on approach that emphasizes a detailed evaluation of the spine. Rather than focusing only on where you experience pain, he looks for areas of dysfunction that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Chiropractic care isn’t appropriate for every person with migraines, but an examination can help determine whether it may be a reasonable option for you. That same detailed, individualized approach guides the chiropractic care at Main Street Chiropractic.

What Your First Evaluation Looks Like

We start by getting to know your migraine history: how often episodes happen, what symptoms you experience, what tends to precede them, previous injuries, and any patterns you’ve noticed. Furthermore, we want to know how they affect your daily living and will monitor improvement with progressive exams and evaluations of your daily living.

From there, our chiropractor evaluates the movement and function of your spine and neck using the Gonstead approach. This helps him identify areas of spinal dysfunction that may be contributing to your symptoms and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your individual situation.

If you’re wondering what happens beyond that initial evaluation, you can see what to expect as a new patient before coming into the office.

Decades Devoted to the Gonstead Approach

For Dr. Wartenberg, the Gonstead System has been a long-term area of study as well as a method he uses in practice. He has been in private practice in New Jersey since 1990 and has held Diplomate status with the Gonstead Clinical Studies Society since 1991. He is one of approximately 60 Gonstead Diplomates worldwide.

He earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life Chiropractic College, now Life University, in 1987. From 2014 to 2021, he also served on the New Jersey Board of Chiropractic Examiners after gubernatorial appointment and Senate confirmation.

That experience has been backed by extensive postgraduate education, including approximately 620 hours of Gonstead seminars and further training in Gonstead methodology and extremity adjusting. His knowledge of the approach has also taken him beyond the treatment room. Dr. Wartenberg has taught chiropractic students and doctors in both the United States and England and has lectured internationally on Gonstead technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with migraines?

Chiropractic care may help some people who experience migraines, particularly when neck or spinal dysfunction may be contributing to their symptoms. An evaluation can help determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for you.

What are common migraine triggers?

Triggers vary from person to person. Stress, changes in sleep, dehydration, certain foods, hormonal shifts, bright lights, and other environmental factors are commonly reported. Tracking when migraines occur may help you identify your own patterns.

When should I see a medical doctor about a migraine?

A sudden or unusually severe headache should be medically evaluated, particularly if it feels different from your usual migraines or occurs with weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, vision changes, difficulty speaking, or fever. Chiropractic care should not replace appropriate medical evaluation when symptoms could indicate a serious condition.
