What’s Actually Driving Your Headaches?

Tension headaches are often associated with muscle tension, stress, poor posture, or too many hours hunched over a phone or computer. But the neck can play a bigger role than many people realize.

Restricted movement, irritated joints, muscle tension, or changes in the way the head and neck move may contribute to certain headaches. Lingering effects from an old car accident, sports injury, or other trauma can sometimes be involved as well.

Dehydration, poor sleep, and stress may also influence how often headaches occur or how intense they feel. Because so many factors can be involved, a thorough evaluation matters more than simply guessing at the cause or simply masking with medications.

Migraines have their own symptoms and potential triggers, so migraine care may be worth exploring if your headaches include throbbing pain, nausea, or sensitivity to light or sound.

How Chiropractic Care Fits In

Chiropractic care looks at how well your spine and nervous system are functioning, not just where it hurts. When the neck and upper back aren’t moving as they should, improving that movement may help reduce strain on your nervous system and help heal the surrounding muscles and joints.

Dr. Wartenberg uses the Gonstead System of Chiropractic, a hands-on approach built around a very careful evaluation of the spine. Rather than focusing only on the spot where your head hurts, he looks for areas of dysfunction that may be causing your symptoms. The Gonstead system utilizes multiple tools including a nervoscope, motion and digital palpation and x-rays(if needed) to focus in on your exact cause.

Care is based on your health history, exam findings, and individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Chiropractic care isn’t appropriate for every type of headache, but an evaluation can help determine whether it may be a reasonable option for you. This individualized evaluation is central to the chiropractic care at Main Street Chiropractic.

Experience Focused on Finding What May Be Contributing

Dr. Wartenberg has worked with the Gonstead System throughout much of his chiropractic career. After earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life Chiropractic College, now Life University, in 1987, he entered private practice in 1990. He became a Diplomate of the Gonstead Clinical Studies Society in 1991, a distinction held by approximately 60 practitioners worldwide.
His continuing education includes about 620 hours of Gonstead seminars as well as advanced study in Gonstead methodology and extremity adjusting. Over the years, he has also shared that training with other chiropractors, serving on postgraduate faculty, teaching at chiropractic colleges in the United States and England, and lecturing internationally.

Dr. Wartenberg was appointed to the New Jersey Board of Chiropractic Examiners, where he served from 2014 to 2021 following Senate confirmation. He was also named Chiropractor of the Year by the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors in 2010 and received the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

“We don’t want to mask your symptoms. We wish to solve the underlying issues causing your health challenges.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with headaches?

Chiropractic care may help many people with headaches, particularly when symptoms are associated with the nervous system that influences the neck, spine, muscles, or joints. An evaluation can help determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for your situation.

What kinds of headaches may respond to chiropractic care?

Certain tension-type and neck-related headaches may be associated with issues involving the neck and surrounding structures. Because headaches can have many different causes, we evaluate each patient individually with the very specific Gonstead method of Chiropractic, rather than assuming the same approach is right for everyone.

How does a chiropractor evaluate headaches?

Your evaluation begins with a conversation about your health history, headache patterns, previous injuries, and other factors that may be relevant. Dr. Wartenberg then examines the movement and function of your spine and neck using the Gonstead approach to identify areas that may be contributing to your symptoms.

When should I see a medical doctor instead?

A sudden or unusually severe headache, or one accompanied by weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, vision changes, difficulty speaking, or fever, should be medically evaluated promptly. Chiropractic care should not replace appropriate medical care when symptoms could indicate a serious condition.
