Gonstead System in Medford
A Chiropractic Approach Built on Precision
When Medford chiropractor Dr Wartenberg was a chiropractic student, he explored every technique he could find. Gonstead stood out immediately because it felt logical, scientific, and deeply rooted in understanding how the body truly works. It was time-tested with decades of experience and results. The more he studied it, the more it aligned with his view of spinal function.
That curiosity led him to the Gonstead Clinic in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, a small farming community. After starting his practice in 1923, he built two clinics. His final one in 1964, at the age of 65, was a 22,000-square-foot clinic. Right next to the clinic, he built a hotel to accommodate the world travelers. The top half of the clinic was designed with the capacity to see hundreds of patients a day. The reception area had over one hundred chairs. Maps had colored push pins to show where patients had traveled the world to see him. The bottom half of the clinic was a world-class teaching facility where doctors traveled from around the world to learn from the master himself. Standing in two feet of snow on his first visit, Dr Wartenberg saw firsthand the place where patients once traveled from around the world for help.
A System Shaped by Results
Dr. Gonstead originally taught one day seminars that eventually grew to several days because doctors wanted to understand exactly how he was helping such difficult cases. He built a reputation for taking on challenges that others could not solve.
People stayed in local homes before the clinic hotel was built because so many traveled long distances seeking care. Gonstead often told patients he did not need to know what had already failed because his method was different, and he refused to simply repeat what did not help them before.
Training, Expertise, and Advanced Case Management
Dr Wartenberg went on to earn recognition as a Diplomate in the Gonstead Clinical Studies Society, completing more than 100 hours of seminars, a case study presentation, testing, and two years in practice. He also became eligible for Fellow status after 10 years and at least 35 seminars, and today has accumulated more than 700 hours of postgraduate study. Additionally, he has taught post-graduate Gonstead and extremity seminars across the United States, England, Sweden, and Canada.
Who It Helps
The Gonstead System and Technique supports many of the same concerns that bring people to any chiropractor, yet the difference lies in the specificity of analysis and the careful way each adjustment is delivered. It has five pillars used to analyze the spine, all building and supporting the precise methods to determine the cause of the problem. As well, the technique or adjustments are specific to the locations found whereby only one vertebra is moved, whereas many other methods are non-specific. Furthermore the Gonstead technique does not utilize any quick and forceful rotation or twisting of the spine. Dr Wartenberg has managed complex cases including patients with failed spine surgeries, disc replacements, and surgical fusions. One recent example involved an Australian Navy nurse who had multiple surgeries but never regained comfort or a complete night sleep for eight years until receiving Gonstead-based care. Stories like hers reflect the method’s focus on clear reasoning, precise adjusting, and decades of thoughtful case management.
